As of December 31, 2011, the Company has two compounds in development, one is to be used in cancer therapy and the other intended to be used in the treatment of liver fibrosis and fatty liver disease. Galectin Therapeutics (GALT) offers drug research and development to create new therapies for fibrotic disease and cancer. This stock closed up 9.6% to $12.06 in Monday's trading session.

    Monday's Volume: 674,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 222,171

    Volume % Change: 149%

Shares of GALT jumped higher on Monday after Ascendiant initiated coverage on the stock with a buy recommendation.

From a technical perspective, GALT spiked sharply higher here with strong upside volume. This stock has been uptrending for the last three months, with shares ripping higher from its low of $3.95 to its recent high of $13.21. During that move, shares of GALT have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of GALT within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if GALT manages to take out Monday's high of $12.44 and then once it clears its 52-week high at $13.21 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in GALT as long as it's trending above some near-term support levels at $11 or at $10 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 222,171 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then GALT will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory above $13.21, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $15 to $16.

Hot Dividend Companies To Buy Right Now

One fund is paying a tempting 11% yield. Another offers 8%. Which one should you reach for?

To answer that, you need to ask the right question.

The question is not "How high is the yield?" Instead, it's "How secure is the dividend?"

Dividend safety is far more important to total returns than yield size. My colleague, Elliott Gue, touched on this a few weeks ago.

Consider how chasing two of the S&P 500's highest yielders, which carried dangerously unsecure dividends not too long ago, would have impacted your returns.

Frontier Communications (NYSE: FTR) carried a yield over 18% before it chopped its quarterly dividend by 60% in February 2012 (from 25 cents a share to 10 cents). Its share price plummeted more than 26% over the three months following the reduction announcement.

Hedging is common practice for any energy company, but Q1 earnings reports have already proven that this financial tactic can only absorb so much of increasingly volatile energy prices. Exelon (NYSE: EXC  ) took a one-time $235 million hit this quarter as a result of natural gas hedges gone wild, while PPL's (NYSE: PPL  ) bad bet helped knock around 20% off its first quarter EPS.

Some companies even make their regular dividend payments by raising capital, either from debt offerings or by selling new shares. Utilities PPL (NYSE: PPL  ) and Southern (NYSE: SO  ) have used this strategy for years, as capital-intensive operations often make it necessary for utilities to find sources of cash elsewhere in order to give investors the dividends they've come to rely on.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Travis Hoium]

Dow component Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ  ) reported results that were well ahead of estimates, but the stock is flat as I write. The company said adjusted earnings rose 14% to $1.48, which was $0.09 ahead of estimates, while revenue rose 8.5% to $17.88 billion. Medical companies have struggled against the cost pressures on the industry, so it was especially encouraging that Johnson & Johnson's pharmaceutical business saw 12% growth to lead the company. The medical industry is volatile right now, but Johnson & Johnson is big and diverse enough to navigate these waters, just as it did during the second quarter.

Whether the new regulations have arrived in time to prevent a bust in the commercial sector similar to the one seen with home mortgages remains to be seen. Top Trucking Companies For 2014

On Tuesday, an event took place that added momentum to the massive rollout of "Made in America" fuel...   Ford Motor announced it will begin offering compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel systems for one of the country's best-selling trucks – its F-150 pickup. It will be the first half-ton pick-up truck capable of running on natural gas.   For years, I've been telling readers how the low price and abundance of natural gas will help it become a major transportation fuel. The massive cost savings has led industry giants like Wal-Mart, Fed-Ex, UPS, Waste Management, Coca-Cola, and AT&T to switch their trucking fleets from diesel to natural gas   But natural gas isn't just replacing diesel as a fuel anymore. It's beginning to replace gasoline. Drivers are craving it. And it could lead to huge gains for the companies that can take advantage of it.

Advisors' Opinion:

In total, the current capacity for oil pipelines delivering all types of crude to the U.S. is about 3.4 million barrels per day. These pipelines are all operated by four companies.

Pipeline Owner/Operator Capacity Destination Express-Platte Spectra Energy (NYSE: SE  ) 280,000 bpd Wood River, Ill. Keystone TransCanada 590,000 bpd Cushing, Okla. Enbridge and Lakehead System Enbridge (NYSE: ENB  ) and Enbridge Energy Partners (NYSE: EEP  ) 2.5 million bpd Multiple, but 190,000 bpd to Cushing, Okla.

For the existing Canada-U.S. pipelines, there is probably little to no effect whether the pipeline gets built or not. The capacity for these pipelines is already contracted out, and a majority of the oil from these pipelines goes to either the Midwest or Rocky Mountain regions.

Midstream companies have seen a boom in activities recently that has paid increasing dividends to shareholders. Cash distributions in the industry, however, have not been equal, and some firms have disbursed greater amounts than others. Moreover, financial institutions have highlighted Enbridge Energy Partners (EEP) as a potential market outperformer, granting the stock a uyrating. Morgan Stanley and Credit Suisse are the two institutions in question, raising the target price to the low $30s, barely above the $29 value assigned by Zacks last month. The upside to this side of the oil and gas industry is cash flow, and high return on capital invested, coupled with a high-yield offering a good opportunity for a long-term investment. But, will the trend last long enough to make the investment worthwhile?

The real key for TI will be whether its analog chips can gain greater application. General Electric's Industrial Internet project continues to move forward, and connecting networks of machines in order to improve communication and gather data should require plenty of sensor-chips of the type in which TI specializes. Moreover, Cisco Systems and its Internet of Things initiative also have promise both for TI and for Freescale Semiconductor (NYSE: FSL  ) , which came out with a new microcontroller chip earlier this year that could potentially work together with TI-made Wi-Fi transmitted chips to facilitate communication. Freescale is tiny compared to TI, but a partnership there could help both companies make more from the opportunity than they could separately.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Travis Hoium]

Ten years ago, it seemed impossible that solar power on rooftops would become a widespread reality. Today, the question is why it's not growing faster. Companies such as Sunrun, Clean Power Finance, SolarCity (NASDAQ: SCTY  ) , and SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR  ) are all leading the charge in growing solar leasing for rooftops, blowing to top off the traditional energy model. The biggest hindrance is consumer awareness at this point.

  • [By Paul Ausick]

SunPower Corp. (NASDAQ: SPWR) does use silicon in manufacturing its solar cells and modules, but the silicon is supplied by third-party vendors. SunPower has chosen to enter the downstream end of the business — designing and installing solar projects — rather than getting involved in the wafer-making end of the solar market.

  • [By Travis Hoium]

In essence, Kreamer thinks the role of leasing solar, which is currently dominated by Clean Power Finance, SunRun, SolarCity (NASDAQ: SCTY  ) , and SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR  ) , can eventually be dominated by utilities -- where CPF could provide financing. If you think about it, this model makes a lot of sense. Utilities have available low-cost capital and already have monthly contact with their customers. Why shouldn't they play a role in building the future of electricity generation?

Aimia (AIM) Inc. decision to move its Aeroplan reward-partnership to Toronto-Dominion (TD) Bank is a blow to Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, which stands to lose customers and as much as C$3 billion ($2.9 billion) in credit-card balances.

Among a few stocks that had negative returns in the quarter, Veeco Instruments (VECO) and Titan International (TWI) are also among the smaller positions in the portfolio. Titan, which declined 11.4% in the quarter and will be discussed later in this letter, is a relatively new stock in the portfolio and one that we added to as the share price declined.Among the stocks that we added to in the quarter were Atwood Oceanics (ATW) and Titan International (TWI).As mentioned above, Titan declined nearly 12% in the quarter and we added to the position as the stock weakened. As you may recall, we initiated the position in TWI in the fourth quarter of 2013 in the mid- teens. Despite our additional TWI purchases, we do not yet own a full position in the stock. However, we have plenty of capacity to take the stock to a normal full position, which is 3%, but this assumes the company earns the right to have more of your capital allocated to the position. The primary reason why TWI shares sold off recently is that the wheel and tire markets for large construction and mining equipment remain depressed. Investors had hoped that the off-road, large construction equipment and mining business would see some acceleration after the very cold winter season, but that does not appear to be the case. Tire inventory levels for large, off-road equipment were too high for dealers to be aggressive and purchase tires en masse earlier this year. However, there is some recent evidence that much of the excess tire inventory has been reduced to levels that now support some restocking. Our investment thesis for TWI is not predicated on the wheel and tire market for large, off-road equipment to come roaring back to levels experienced before the financial crisis. Rather we believe the assets TWI has accumulated over the past decade can be managed more efficiently and, therefore, profit margins can improve without a huge increase in revenues. We recently visited one of TWI Midwest tire facilities a

At the end of last week, small cap sandwich stock Potbelly Corp (NASDAQ: PBPB) had a delicious surge of 120% for its IPOmeaning its probably a good idea to see whether its still worth getting in on the action plus take a look at the performance of peersCosi Inc (NASDAQ: COSI), Panera Bread Co (NASDAQ: PNRA) and Einstein Noah Restaurant Group, Inc (NASDAQ: BAGL) as Subway remains private. I should mention that competing with Subway in the sandwich business is a tall order as they have 40,229 restaurants in 102 countries and territories as of early Septembermaking them thelargest single-brand restaurant chain and the largest restaurant operator globally. However, Potbelly Corp and its peers Cosi Inc, Panera Bread Co and Einstein Noah Restaurant Group aren slugging it out directly with Subway.

Richmont Mines (RIC) engages in the mining, exploration and development of mining properties, principally gold in Canada. This stock closed up 2.4% to $1.68 in Tuesday's trading session.

    Tuesday's Range: $1.61-$1.68

    52-Week Range: $1.31-$5.50

    Tuesday's Volume: 76,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 101,786

From a technical perspective, RIC bounced higher here right off its 50-day moving average of $1.59 with decent upside volume. This stock has been uptrending strong for the last month and change, with shares moving higher from its low of $1.31 to its recent high of $1.71. During that move, shares of RIC have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of RIC within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if RIC manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance at $1.71 to $1.80 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in RIC as long as it's trending above its 50-day at $1.59 or above more near-term support levels at $1.50 to $1.44 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 101,786 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then RIC will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $2.10 to $2.20. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give RIC a chance to tag its 200-day moving average at $2.48.

Down 70% over 12 months, Richmont Mines Inc. has a market cap of $56.23 billion, and trades with a P/B of 0.60.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Nickey Friedman] We probably should have seen this coming. After all, for the last few months, Burger King Worldwide (ticker: BKW) has taken its royal crown back amid strategic moves aimed directly at dethroning its larger rival McDonald's (MCD) . The latest policy change from Burger King threatens a key McDonald's demographic as the Home of the Whopper ups the stakes.

Best Restaurant Companies To Buy For 2014: Arcos Dorados Holdings Inc (ARCO)

Arcos Dorados Holdings Inc., incorporated on December 9, 2010, is a McDonald franchisee. As of December 31, 2010, the Company operated or franchised 1,755 McDonald-branded restaurants, which represented 6.7% of McDonald total franchised restaurants globally. Company-Operated and Franchised Restaurants

The Company operates its McDonald-branded restaurants under two basic structures: Company-operated restaurants operated by the Company and franchised restaurants operated by franchisees. Under both operating alternatives the real estate location may ! either be owned or leased by the Company. It owns, fully manages and operates the Company-operated restaurants and retains any operating profits generated by such restaurants, after paying operating expenses and the franchise and other fees owed to McDonald under the Master Franchise Agreements (MFAs). In Company-operated restaurants, it assumes the capital expenditures for the building and equipment of the restaurant and, if it owns the real estate location, for the land as well. Under its franchise arrangements, franchisees provide a portion of the capital required by initially investing in the equipment, signs, seating and decor of their restaurants, and by reinvesting in the business over time. It is required by the MFAs to own the real estate or to secure long-term leases for franchised restaurant sites. It subsequently leases or subleases the property to franchisees.

In exchange for the lease and services, franchisees pay a monthly rent to the Company, based on the greater of a fixed rent or a certain percentage of gross sales. In addition to this monthly rent, it collects the monthly continuing franchise fee, which generally is 5% of the United States dollar equivalent of the restaurant gross sales, and pays these fees to McDonald pursuant to the MFAs. However, if a franchisee fails to pay its monthly continuing franchise fee, it remains liable for payment in full of these fees to McDonald. As of December 31, 2010, it was engaged in several joint ventures, which collectively owned 24 restaurants, in Argentina, Chile and Colombia.

The Company classifies its restaurants into one of four categories: freestanding, food court, in-store and mall stores. In-store restaurants are part ! of a larg! er building and resemble freestanding restaurants, except for the lack of a drive-through area. Mall stores are located in malls like food court restaurants, but have their own seating areas. As of December 31, 2010, 808 (or 46.2%) of its restaurants were freestanding, 359 (or 20.5%) were food court, 265 (or 15.1%) were in-stores and 319 (or 18.2%) were mall stores. Arcos Dorados (ARCO) operates and franchises McDonald's restaurants in Latin America. This stock closed up 7.7% to $13.33 in Wednesday's trading session.

    Wednesday's Volume: 3.81 million

    Three-Month Average Volume: 856,761

    Volume % Change: 333%

From a technical perspective, ARCO soared higher here back above both its 50-day moving average at $12.31 and its 200-day moving average at $12.86 with heavy upside volume. This move has now taken shares of ARCO out of its downtrend and the stock closed strong near the highs of the day. Shares of ARCO are now moving within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if ARCO manages to take out its intraday high of $13.42 and then once it clears more resistance at $14.35 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ARCO as long as it's trending above its 200-day at $12.86 or its 50-day at $12.31 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 856,761 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then ARCO will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $15.52 to its 52-week high at $16. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give ARCO a chance to tag $18 to $19.

Arcos Dorados' (NYSE: ARCO  ) stock has remained basically flat this year, as a strong U.S. dollar has weakened the company's earnings, which are derived almost entirely from Latin America. As an example, the company's Brazilian division sales were up almost 11% in 2012 versus the prior year on an organic basis, from $1.8 billion to more than $2.0 billion. However, due to the depreciation of the Brazilian real, the division's revenues actually decreased by $93 million in dollar terms. In the accompanying video, Fool contributor Asit Sharma discusses Arcos' recent results, and why he sees a buying opportunity in Arcos Dorados stock.

Internationally, Jamba still has a small presence, but it made a big step by making a master franchise development agreement to open 80 stores throughout Mexico beginning later this year. The success that Arcos Dorados (NYSE: ARCO  ) has had in Mexico and other Latin American countries in franchising McDonald's (NYSE: MCD  ) locations shows the huge potential that the region has generally for American restaurants, and focusing on warmer climates should help Jamba avoid the seasonality it suffers colder markets like the U.S. and Canada.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Rick Aristotle Munarriz]

AP/Jae C. Hong For all the talk about drones replacing parcel carriers or self-driving cars disrupting the taxi industry, there's a bigger tech revolution happening in the restaurant industry right now that may displace workers far sooner than anything futurists foresee in those other industries. The arrival of tablets and smartphone apps that detail menu items, take orders, and let you settle up your tab at the en of the meal will be a big theme among casual dining chains and even a few independent foodie haunts this year. Brinker International's (EAT) Chili's, DineEquity's (DIN) Applebee's, and a handful of San Francisco fine dining establishments are leading the push to add the technology, which will make waiters and waitresses less necessary. None of the chains have said that these tech initiatives will lead them to reduce waitstaff headcount -- but it doesn't take a lot of foresight to connect the dots. If folks are using table-side tablets to place orders and ask for drink refills, or firing up a smartphone app to pay at the end of a meal, that naturally translates into fewer front-of-house employees needed to keep an eatery going. Order Up In fact, some industry leaders outright deny that mobile tech will displace staff. "This really isn't a labor play," DineEquity CEO Julia Stewart said on CNBC late last year, explaining Applebee's move to deploy 100,000 tablets this year -- one at every table. "It's not about saving labor. This is really about creating an opportunity to talk to our guest, have an interactive conversation with our guest, and give our guest a lot more opportunities." At first, a waitstaff will be instrumental in assisting customers as they use the tablets to place orders or pay their bills. There will also be patrons who are apprehensive about embracing the technology, and Applebee's will still have waiters taking orders the old-fashioned way for people who prefer talking to a person. Chili's is going with a less-comprehensive table

As outlined in this article, the company underperformance in its core brands, Red Lobster and Olive Garden resulted in lower sales in the last quarter. Darden was not the only one facing trouble, other restaurants such as Dine Equity (DIN) and Yum! Brands (YUM) have also fallen short. On the other hand, we see we think Darden can continue to get benefitted from the acquisitions.

Gold-production forecasts were hiked 48%. Not all mines are performing well, though, and the price of silver has fallen, so the company has been cutting costs, in part via layoffs.

Endocyte, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company, develops targeted therapies for the treatment of cancer and inflammatory diseases. Its SMDCs target receptors that are over-expressed on diseased cells, relative to healthy cells. Endocyte, Inc. was founded in 1995 and is headquartered in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Henry Kawabe]

Biopharmaceutical company Endocyte (ECYT) reported a second quarter 2013 net loss of 23 cents per share, which amounted to almost three times the loss of Zacks Consensus Estimate of 8 cents per share, and a larger loss compared to the same quarter the previous year; the stock did not experience a decline. It appears as though investors have maintained confidence in the company whose stock has more than doubled over the past year. And I believe there are good reasons for such confidence in the company, and the stock. The first reason is its pipeline of drugs led by its flagship proprietary technology novel small molecule drug conjugates (SMDCs) that actively target receptors that are over-expressed on cancer cells relative to healthy cells. And the second reason is that the SMDC technology has led to its collaboration with Merck (MRK) on a cancer treatment vintafolide (EC145) that has the potential to net Endocyte $1 billion.

  • [By Jake L'Ecuyer]

    Equities Trading UP
Endocyte (NASDAQ: ECYT) shares shot up 121.31 percent to $32.40 after Merck & Co (NYSE: MRK) and Endocyte announced the European CHMP positive opinions for VYNFINIT and the companion agents FOLCEPRI and NEOCEPRI.

  • [By Benjamin Paluch]

Endocyte (ECYT) is a drug development company that seeks to develop small molecule drug candidates (SMDCs) for cancer and other diseases. SMDCs like vintafolide (EC145) are drugs linked to targeting ligands. Targeting ligands are like keys.
