Top 10 Valued Companies To Own For 2014

By Chris Rees

In a blaze of cosmic, star-spangled glory, a new generation of dotcoms has officially come of age. The latest to reach the stratosphere is Twitter (NASDAQ: TWTR) which became a public company in November. Priced at a mere $26 a share, it soared to within a hair of $50 within the first two hours of trading. Sweet nectar indeed for those privileged enough to be allocated shares before the start of trading.

The fact that Twitter—currently valued by the market at over $24 billion as of November 18—is losing money, and will likely continue to lose money, should not give pause to those who believe the sky is the limit for this new incarnation of stargazing dotcoms that conjure up reminiscences past and now forgotten shooting stars like Netscape, Geocities, Lycos, TheGlobe.com, Pets.com and Webvan.

In writing about the dotcom crash, Investopedia—which points out that when the bubble popped, the Nasdaq, home of most of the dotcoms, lost roughly 80% of its value from peak to trough —has this to say:

    Where growth will come from
One area that Newell Rubbermaid still has to tap fully is emerging markets. The company has done a good job of expanding overseas, with 17% annual growth in Latin America. But with barely a quarter of its sales coming from outside the U.S. and Canada, the company has a lot further to go. Storage rival Tupperware (NYSE: TUP  ) gets fully 60% of its total revenue from emerging markets, and it too has seen impressive gains in South America as well as the Asia-Pacific region.

Sanctions that keep Western oil service firms — like Halliburton (HAL) and Schlumberger (SLB) from doing business in Iran remain firmly in place. That’s a huge issue because Iran needs their help in order to get oil flowing and keep it flowing. Like much of the Middle East, Iran is facing the problem of dwindling output from its legacy oil fields and needs some Western-style technology to keep pumping.

While the U.S. economy is sitting pretty as China slows, things aren't so black-and-white for American companies. Leading manufacturers such as Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) have seen China as a major opportunity for growth in future years on the back of the country's previous growth. While the U.S. rebound and housing recovery should help Caterpillar, a major Chinese infrastructure investment would have propelled this company -- and the industrial sector as a whole -- back up the charts. That obviously won't happen if China's economy keeps falling and its manufacturing sector continues to be mired in contraction territory.

Yesterday, stocks overcame early weakness to finish in positive territory. Today, they’ll have their work cut out for them if they’re to repeat the feat, thanks to big drops in Caterpillar (CAT), United Technologies (UTX) and retailer likes TJX Companies (TJX), BestBuy (BBY) and L Brands (LB).

Heavy equipment manufacturer Caterpillar(CAT) has been hit hard by the slowdown in metals and mining this year. CAT stock is already off 7% in 2013, and more declines are in order going forward.
